Stickers: vinyl or paper? How to choose a material for stickers and labels
Paper, white or clear vinyl, matt or gloss laminate? A comparison of materials for logo stickers and product labels, with examples of where each works.

The same design can look completely different on paper and on vinyl, and behave completely differently after a week in the fridge or in the sun. The choice of material depends above all on where the sticker will go and how long it needs to last. Below is a comparison of the most popular options.
Self-adhesive paper
The cheapest and most versatile option. It takes print well, has a pleasant, natural texture and works brilliantly in dry places.
When to choose it:
- stickers sealing takeaway packaging and bags,
- stickers for mail and parcels,
- labels for dry products: coffee, tea, confectionery,
- short promotional runs.
Limitations: paper does not like water or grease. Without a laminate it scuffs easily and gets soggy.
An interesting variant is specialty paper: textured or cream-coloured. It gives a product a handmade feel and looks great with foil.
White vinyl
Vinyl resists moisture, tearing and abrasion. It is the safe choice wherever the sticker comes into contact with water, cold or frequent handling.
When to choose it:
- labels for bottles and jars kept in the fridge,
- cosmetics and bathroom products,
- stickers for equipment, crates and returnable packaging,
- outdoor stickers (with laminate).
Clear vinyl
Clear vinyl means only the print shows on the packaging, with no white rectangle around it. The “printed straight onto the product” effect looks great on glass and shop windows.
What to watch out for: colours on clear vinyl are less opaque and depend on the surface the sticker goes on. On dark glass, light colours may barely show, so for designs like that it is worth asking about a white underprint.
Laminate: matt or gloss?
Laminate is a thin protective layer applied over the print. It protects against scratches, moisture and fading.
- Matt: elegant, with no glare, ideal for premium brands and cosmetics.
- Gloss: boosts colour saturation, works well for product photos and vivid graphics.
For stickers that need to last or will be used outdoors, a laminate is essential in practice.
Shape: standard or contour cut?
Stickers can have a simple shape (circle, oval, rectangle) or be contour cut, for example around the outline of your logo. Contour cutting does not have to raise the cost much, and the result is far more eye-catching. For an order like this, include the cut line as a separate vector layer; if you do not have one, we will prepare it for you.
